Lean Manufacturing came about from a study by Womack & Jones of the Toyota Production System (TPS). In a nutshell the definition of Lean is a system that produces precisely what the customer wants, when they want it and with minimal waste. Anything that does not add value from the customers prospective is removed. A lean business strives to reduce and remove wasteful processes, which is different from cutting costs.

Although Lean Manufacturing originally came from the manufacturing sector, it has been proven to be just as effective in the service industry and private sectors.

Lean is very much a practical, hands on discipline.

Six Sigmacame from Motorola and is based on studies by a number of American and Japanese quality control experts. It was originally a set of disciplines aimed at improving manufacturing processes and eliminating defects. This was subsequently extended to also encompass other  business processes. At the core of Six Sigma is it’s analytical focus. It’s very name is it’s principle of reducing wasteful process to 3.4 parts on 1 million cycles or opportunities to create a fault.
